| The Talking Knots of the Incas 'Quipus' are mnemonic devices made of Alpaca hair or cotton cords with numeric and other values encoded by knots. Quipus were one of the many items carried by Chasquis and are considered the oldest forms of 'written' communications used in Peru. 'Quipucamayocs', accountants of the Inca Emire, were in charge of creating and deciphering Quipus content. The image on the right was taken from a drawing made by Guaman Poma de Ayala, Peruvian chronicler of the XVI century. |
