"El Marinerito" [The Little Sailor] First Airmail Stamp of Peru Issued December 29, 1927
Serviced by Peruvian Navy, this stamp was used for the airmail service between the cities of Iquitos [Peruvian amazon] and Lima [on the coast of the Pacific ocean]. To avoid the dangerous flight over the Andes to reach the coast [more than 16,000 feet above sea level], the service wasn't totally by air. From Lima, mail was carried by train to La Oroya [west side of the Andes], then by land over the mountains to the east side to the city of San Ramon and from there by airplane to Masisea [2 hours flight], lastly by land again to Iquitos [4 hours ride]. The charge for the airmail service was 1 Sol, plus 10 cents for train / land service combination, plus 2 cents postal tax "pro Plebiscite - Tacna & Arica".
The cover below from IQUITOS to LIMA, shows another distinctive characteristic, it's addressed in Spanish and Chinese Chinese immigration to Peru started in the mid 19th century. Check this web site http://www.answers.com/topic/chinatowns-in-latin-america for a description of chinatowns in Latin America, including the little village of Chino a few miles from Iquitos.
Two settings of the overprint exist, both made of 5 different positions. The two "marineritos" on this cover are from the second setting positions 1 & 2.
