Within a few days, the
demand for stamps was greater than the sparse supplies available. Post office employees searched through the vaults and
files and gathered together what stamps they could find. In order to guard against fraud, a total of eleven “identical”
triangles were prepared and all stamps were overprinted with a triangle. Starting in December 1883, the following stamps were
placed on sale.
