The war dragged on for
two more years, with military marches and countermarches, Chile controlling the
coastal region and the Peruvian government and other Peruvian regional leaders
controlling the Andes mountain and jungle regions.
Slowly, both sides began to realize that neither would be able to defeat the
other, and the cost of the occupation of Peru was a tremendous economic burden upon
Chile.
